National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

The National Council of Negro Women Inc. is collaborating with Howard University Health Center, Substance Abuse HIV/AIDS Outreach Program (SHOP), and Project SHAPE to observe the National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day at Howard University, March 3, 2011. National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a nationwide observance that encourages people to take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and raise awareness of its impact on women and girls.

Women face unique challenges when it comes to preventing and treating HIV. Although HIV is more prevalent in men, about one-quarter of people in the United States living with HIV are women according to the National Women’s Health Information Center.

Coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health (OWH),

NCNW will be holding health fair exhibits with conjunction with message therapy sessions, relationships and communication sessions, film screening and discussion, as well as HIV testing from 11am-3pm at the Blackburn Center Ballroom at Howard University.

CELEBRATING THE 1st ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA'S "LET’S MOVE CAMPAIGN"

(Washington, D.C.)-The National Council of Negro Women, Inc (NCNW) partnered with Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) will be commemorating the 1^st anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move Campaign” by hosting events under their “Fit for Life” targeting obesity in America.

On Wednesday, February 9, 2011, Gertrude Peele, Florida State Convener, NCNW, the creator of the phenomenal Reed Educational Campus, designed to improve the quality of life for preteen girls in Jacksonville, Florida, suffering from obesity and other health problems. The “Fit for Life” CORE LAND project is an expansion of the campus to help girls and the surrounding communities comprehend the need for better food choices and the benefits of exercise.

Activities include: 2,025 Foot Scenic Walking Trail * Old Charleston Joggling Bench * Yoga Gardening * Flower Cutting

Ms. Peele spent a great deal of time getting the Jacksonville, Florida Section of NCNW ready for this long term, sustainable health project, which now includes the Reed Educational Campus, a permanent structure, along with the garden and accompanying land. NATIONAL BLACK HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY 2011

"It Takes a Village to Fight HIV," that is the theme of this year’s National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), held on February 7, 2011. NBHAAD is a national initiative to better educate African Americans about HIV testing and treatment that has been occurring for the past 11 years.

HIV/AIDS is a crisis within African American community with more than 49 percent of cases in 2007, according to the Office of Minority Health. What makes the statistics even more menacing is among all ethnicities affected with HIV/AIDS African American women have a disproportionate rate of infection. In 2007, 61 percent of new cases of HIV infection were black women According to Family Foundation HIV/AIDS, while more than 35 percent of black women were diagnosed with AIDS a year later.

This is a call to action for the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. We must actively participate in the research, treatment, and prevention of HIV/AIDS, especially in its reach toward the direction of Black women and communities worldwide.

The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. will be holding events at Howard University and Bennett College on February 7, 2011, in order to spread awareness to this issue. Please See attached flyers for more information.
